What shoes to get for Bet costume in Oliver play?

I'm playing Bet in a production of Oliver. Actors are responsible for providing their own shoes and socks/hose. What type of shoes/socks/hose should I get? I am not familiar with the period. My dress is dingy white with light gray tiny flowers. It is 3/4 length which was a surprise, since I thought the period called for floor length, but whatever. I just need the shoes. I will also need shoes for my son who will be playing Charley Bates. If someone could recommend workable shoes that you can actually find at a store or what to look for at a thrift shop, that would be great.

I'd look for some black, very feminine, no heel, lace up boots. Thrift shop is great, gives that worn look.

Also, you may want to think about investing in Character Shoes. Several shows and director use character shoes instead of period costumes shoes.
Reply:I'd wear character heels, too. They're not as authentically period, but you can use them again. (And any working-class Victorian boot you can buy is going to be black. Poor women like bet would'nt have owned white shoes--way impractical in an age of soot.) Character heels come in beige, if black doesn't look right.
Reply:You could also get away with black ballet slippers and nude colored hose. For your son, simple black or brown oxford shoes would suffice.
Reply:Lace up black boots with a narrow heel. That's fairly period.
